In Honor Of…..
Amid a busy life filled with work, family, and friends, I've found a moment to return to blogging, driven by my passion for wellness and healthy living. Although I'd hoped to start on a lighter note, the harsh reality of recent events compels me to address a critical issue: the disproportionately high cancer mortality rates among Black women. Black women, my friends and colleagues, should not be dying at 40 from cancer. Despite advancements in AI, quantum computing, and precision medicine, the stark disparities in cancer statistics for Black individuals, as reported by the CDC, are both unacceptable and heartbreaking.
However, amidst this reflection, I want to share practical tips for embracing a healthier lifestyle, fully recognizing that the solution extends beyond individual actions to systemic changes and addressing social determinants of health:
Prioritize Your Well-being: Your health is paramount, so listen to your body, that job, activity, or commitment will be there. Regular physical exams and screenings can uncover potential risks, with many tests for genetic markers now accessible through insurance or at a low cost such as via Myriad.
Be Inquisitive: It's essential to engage actively with your healthcare providers. Asking questions helps you understand your health better and make informed decisions.
Self-Care is Key: Dedicate time for self-care, whether it's nourishing your body, hydrating, consulting a therapist, indulging in a massage, or exercising. Your well-being should always take precedence.
Opt for Clean Eating: Aim to consume natural, minimally processed foods. Many additives found in the American food supply are restricted elsewhere due to health concerns.
Cherish Every Moment: Life is precious. Embracing each day with gratitude and joy is vital for your mental and emotional health.
This conversation is just the beginning. As we navigate these challenges, let's commit to fostering a community that supports, educates, and uplifts, paving the way for a healthier tomorrow for everyone.
